The Beretta M9 (officially the Pistol, Semiautomatic, 9mm, M9 ) is the designation for the Beretta 92F semiautomatic pistol used by the United States Armed Forces. The M9 was adopted by the United States military as their service pistol in 1985. It won a competition to replace the M1911A1 as the primary sidearm of the U. S. military. It officially entered service in 1990. The Beretta M9, 92 features a open slide design similiar to the Walther P38. It is designed and manufactured by italian gun manufacturer Beretta. In 2017 the United States Army announced that a customized version of the SIG Sauer P320 will replace the M9. The fullsized model is known as M17.
