In the mid1960s, a vast concrete housing estate rose from neglected marshland on the south bank of the River Thames. The Thamesmead estate promised to be the town of tomorrow. Spiralling construction costs forced residents to take control. Throughout the 1990s, they encountered serious problems and soaring crime rates. The town of tomorrow was a fading dream.
