Seminar on Algebraic Transformation Groups Date: Speaker: Alexander Popkovich Title: Tits alternative for linear groups Abstract: A theorem conjectured by H. Bass and J. P. Serre and proven by Jacques Tits states that a finitely generated linear group either has a solvable subgroup of finite index or a free group on two generators. I intend to give an overview of the proof of this theorem following Tits original paper.
