2 H (1999) dir. Li Ying
Ma Jinsan (19021998), whose name is Chongliu, was born in Dali, Yunnan. In the turbulent first half of the last century, his name was permanently in Chinese history. He used to be Sun Yatsens adviser, served as a general of the Kuomintang, and once bombed Wang Jingweis tomb. However, these legendary experiences have become a thing of the past. In peaceful old age, he is a lonely old man, drowning in the bustling flow of people. In 1998, 96yearold Ma Jinsan bid farewell to his children in the United States and came to live in metropolitan Tokyo. The heroic posture of the army is gone, replaced by endless loneliness and trivial things. Li Ying, a Chinese director living in Japan, used a video camera to record the last ordinary time of the legendary old man. Lis film won the 1999 Berlin International Film Festival Asian Film Promotion Alliance (NETPAC) Award, and the 2000 Hong Kong International Film Festival International Film Critics Fabici Award.
