Tory Slusher: Dark Orchid homage to late 80s, early 90s fusion (2020)
Tory Slusher: At some point I was on a kick of titling songs using the names of obscure colors, clearly this was one of those instances. Doesn t it sound like a Dark Orchid, though It s kind of an homage to those late 80 s, early 90 s fusion groups (like the Brecker Brothers) we all know and love. It begins with the melody being plainly stated against a static tonic, then immediately I begin changing the harmony underneath. So you could think of it as a rather exotic main melody that is being reharmonized automatically. The B section melody has an obvious Latin jazz, funk influence (a la Corea) and these changes serve as the vehicle for the improvised material. Et You have the basic tertiary 3 part structure, only with some additional transitional ideas for added compositional oomph. The concept was to create a chart that was melodic and accessible, yet more complex in its sectional development. interview
