Ninotchka (1939) w, subtitles
Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas star in this American romantic comedy film directed by Ernst Lubitsch for MetroGoldwynMayer, cowritten by Billy Wilder (prior to his emergence as a major film director himself). Plot (IMDb): A stern Soviet woman is sent to Paris to supervise the sale of jewels seized from Russian nobles and finds herself attracted to a man who represents everything she is supposed to hate. Review (Filmsite): with a clever and witty script and the magnificent presence of actress Greta Masterfully produced and Tim Dirks Classic Universal horror film fans should be pleased to note the cameo by Bela Lugosi himself as Garbo s Soviet superior, marking one of the few times outside of Dracula that his natural eastern European accent was used to good advantage in a film. Ninotchka was nominated for four Academy Awards, but lost every one of them to Gone with the I guess that was bad timing. Enjoy And please check out the Lugosi playlist:
