Gewandhausorchester 100 Years On Tour anniversary concert Part I
Großes Concert Gewandhausorchester 100 Years On Tour the programme from 1916 In 1896, the Gewandhaus declined an invitation to give a guest performance for the Richard Wagner Society in nearby Halle. The Gewandhaus directorate wrote to the Mayor of Leipzig, Otto Georgi, in explanation of its decision, that, should the musicians take to the variety this affords, it feared the slackening of discipline. On 18 November 1916, the Gewandhausorchester was at last to embark upon its first ever concert tour. Gewandhauskapellmeister Arthur Nikisch led the Orchestra in concerts in the Swiss cities of Bern, Zürich, Basel, Lucerne and St. Gallen.
