After the Ayatollahs: The Middle East Post Khamenei
Ayatollahs in Iran and Iraq have an unparalleled role in shaping politics inside their countries and throughout the wider Middle East. Given their advanced age and known health problems, however, they may be leaving the political scene in the near future. On February 6th, 2017, the Institute hosted a policy forum with Ali Mamouri and Suzanne Maloney to discuss clerical succession in Iran and Iraq and its implications for U. S. interests in the region. The panel was moderated by Institute fellow Mehdi Khalaji, author of the upcoming study The Future of Leadership in the Shiite Community. Ali Mamouri is a scholar and journalist who teaches political science at the University of Sydney.
