In 1985, two scientists tried to create the surface of a star in the laboratory. In doing so, they glimpsed what chemistry said could not exist a third form of solid carbon. They decided to call the new molecule buckminsterfullerene in recognition of the similarity of its structure to the geodesic domes designed by American architect Buckminster Fuller.
