Molecules with Sunglasses, BBC Documentary, Horizon
In 1985, two scientists tried to create the surface of a star in the laboratory. In doing so, they glimpsed what chemistry said could not exist a third form of solid carbon. How and why does it form Is it out there in space Or is it the solution to one of the great mysteries of the universe The discovery of a surprisingly stable molecule made up of 60 carbon atoms and shaped like a soccer ball. They decided to call the new molecule buckminsterfullerene in recognition of the similarity of its structure to the geodesic domes designed by American architect Buckminster Fuller.
