Felix Savon carried on the Cuban tradition of heavyweight dominance in the amateurs, winning 3 consecutive Olympic Gold Medals, capturing gold at 6 consecutive World Championships, as well as a silver at the 1999 World Championships. In Cuba, Savon would win the Cuban National Championship 13 times between 1985 to 1998. Savon holds wins over future professional world champions Michael Bentt, Ray Mercer, Shannon Briggs, Lamon Brewster, Ruslan Chagaev and Sultan Ibragimov. Savon also beat fellow Olympic champions Ray Mercer, Roberto Balado and Odlanier Solis. Ruslan Chagaev won the first of two World Amateur Championships when he defeated legendary Cuban boxer Felix Savon in 1997. Chagaev defeated Valuev by a 12round majority decision to win the WBA Heavyweight Title on April 14, 2007. He is one of only 5 southpaw heavyweight champions in history. The others are Michael Moorer, Chris Byrd, Corrie Sanders, and Sultan Ibragimov.
