I winter prune when one or more of the following criterion are met: 1. The fruit tree is overgrown. 2. The fruit tree has diseased branches. 3. The fruit tree has broken, or damaged limbs. 4. The fruit tree is 1, 2, years old (sometimes 3 ) and I am developing the trees structure. I have been growing for 28 years on 4 different soil types
