Brazil poverty soars as COVID deaths hit new highs
As the pandemic worsens, the rate of poverty in Brazil is soaring. Millions have been left with nothing after the government suspended financial emergency aid just as COVID infections began spiralling out of control. The seaside town of Marica lives off oil royalties and has decided to spend the money on social plans, creating its own virtual currency, the Mumbuca, to help the poor and the local economy.
