Dave Scherer The Castels Sloopy Can Penguin Loki, 1965
Dave Scherer and the Castels from Decatur, Illinois. Released in early 1965 on Loki Records, Sloopy Can Penguin was the bside to the groups second single, Everybodys Doin It (The Penguin). Members of the group were: Dave Scherer (vocals bass), George Hickman (guitar), Jack Trowbridge (sax), Jim Seitz (sax), Chuck Jordan (drums) and Dee Brownson (organ). Various Decatur newspaper articles at the time suggested that the McCoys hit single Hang On Sloopy was based on this song, going so far as to claim that Scherer the Castels would be receiving royalties on the McCoys hit (a penny per copy). While it is true that Sloopy Can Penguin predates Hang On Sloopy by roughly six months, both appear to have been based on My Girl Sloopy which was written by Bert Berns and Wes Farrell and released by the Vibrations on Atlantic Records in early 1964 a full year before this song was released.
