WATCH: Bridges in Tampa closed due to high winds and storm surge from Hurricane Helene
The Florida Highway Patrol closed the Howard Frankland Bridge across Old Tampa Bay at 3:40 p. m. ET as storm surge and high winds battered passing cars. FHP closed the Sunshine Skyway, which linked St. Petersburg to Manatee County was closed earlier on Thursday. Hurricane Helene is threatening the entire coast of Florida with up to 130 mph winds and 15 feet of storm surge. Helene is now a Category 4 storm. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency in almost every county in the state.
