Jylene Morgan reads this delightful tale of Buford the Little Bighorn written by Bill Peet. In this story, Bufords horns just keep growing and growing and curved back around toward him. Could you imagine all the problems this would cause As you read, (Listen to) the story you will notice that the author does not dump down the words. He liked to use words that they may mot know but would get the meaning from the entire sentence. I had a child one time read about a babbling creek, but as he read it he actually said babbling brook. The meaning of the sentence was there, even though he read that one word wrong. We have to recognize how important that meaning is to reading. I believe in the readaloud process, it is good to read some books that use big words in a story to expand a child s vocabulary. I found it interesting that the author referred to the names of other places that even I had to research to find out where they were.
