Idealistic British surgeon Alec Windom (Peter Finch) travels to Burma, where he quickly becomes embroiled in the politics of the region, favoring the native interests over the imperialists. The doctor s sophisticated wife (Mary Ure) joins him at his remote Asian practice to try and patch up their marriage. Increasingly violent friction between local rubber plantation workers and the authorities force both parties to make decisions.
