The Remarkable Wodaabe. The Nomads of Chad
Tariq Zaidi has spent the last 10 years photographing tribal and indigenous people in over 30 countries in Africa. The nomadic Wodaabe tribe graze their cattle through the Sahel desert from northern Cameroon to Chad, Niger and northeast Nigeria. Crossing countries riven by drought, poverty and war, they shelter in the most basic of structures with few possessions and are totally dependent on their animals for survival. Yet despite the harshness of their environment, its beauty that the Wodaabe prize above all else and once a year, the men don elaborate costumes, daub their faces with makeup and dance for hours in the hope of finding love at the weeklong courtship festival called the Gerewol.
