These wrens are abundant in marshes, cattails, rushes and sedges. They have a plain brown cap and a white eyebrow stripe and white stripes on the back. They generally keep hidden but may climb a cattail to sing or investigate a disturbance. The song is a gurgling mechanical chatter cutcutturrrrrrrur often heard at night.
