Major Jean Baptiste Marchand Honoured Leader Of The French Mission To Fashoda 51 Years Ago (1949)
Porte Doree, Paris, France. Major Jean Baptiste Marchand honoured (Leader of the French mission to Fashoda 51 years ago). The honour of unveiling the statue at the Porte Doree fell to Emile Landeroin 84 last surviving companion of Major Marchand on his famous trek across the African bush from the French Congo to Fashoda in his successful attempt to reach the Upper Nile before the angloegyptian forces under the Sidar, General Sir Herbert Kitchener. The British survivor was Admiral Sir Walter Henry Cowan 79 who as a lieutenant of the Royal navy commended one of the units of the gunboat flotilla that established the first hostile contact with the French mission.
