DIOCLETIANS PALACE ( ST. DOMNIUS CATHEDRAL, CRYPT, BAPTISTERY): SPLIT, CROATIA (4 K)
Split is the second largest city in Croatia, and it features a strong ancient Roman influence. I visited parts of the 1, 700yearold Roman Emperor Diocletian s Palace, which includes Peristyle or Emperor s Square, where Emperor Diocletian lived and where he would address his subjects; St. Domnius Cathedral, with its distinctive bell tower on the outside, and ornately carved wooden doors and beautiful altars on the inside (the cathedral was originally Diocletian s mausoleum); the Crypt of St. Lucy, which is dedicated to Lucy, the Patron Saint of Blindness, as Lucy s eyes were gouged out before she was executed for her religious beliefs during Diocletian s purge; and the 4th century Baptistery of St. John, which was originally a Temple of Jupiter, before being converted to a Baptistery in the 6th century. When you visit Split, especially Diocletian s Palace, it s easy to picture what life was like here centuries ago. I traveled with Adventures Croatia
