Impulse Curve

Impulse Curve electronic sound and lightsensitive control surface Composed by Eli Fieldsteel (2019) Recorded in the Experimental Music Studios at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign on February 23rd, 2021 Impulse Curve is an immersive electroacoustic composition for LightMatrix, a custom lightsensitive control surface consisting of 256 photoresistors, and any number of loudspeakers. Originally premiered as a multiday installation in an 18channel geodesic dome, this work is suitable as a sound installation in a gallery space for passersby to interact with and experience, but can also be presented in concert as a solo improvisatory performance. Several digital soundscapes ebb and flow throughout the piece; some musical parameters respond most strongly to large, obvious gestures, while other musical parameters are more sensitive to subtle physical interactions.
