Mother Teresa A Life of Selfless Service to Humanity Mother Teresa, also known as Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, dedicated her entire life to serving the sick and poor. She was born into a welloff family in Skopje, now part of North Macedonia, in 1910. At the age of 18, Mother Teresa left home to become a nun and joined the Loreto Sisters of Dublin, Ireland. After spending 20 years teaching in schools in India, Mother Teresa felt a calling to serve the poorest of the poor. In 1948, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a congregation that provided care for the underprivileged, sick, and dying, in the slums of Calcutta, India. Mother Teresa s work soon spread to other parts of the world, and she received numerous honors for her tireless efforts, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Despite facing criticism and opposition, Mother Teresa continued her work until her death on September 5, 1997.
