It is considered the second worst act of terrorism, aside from the September 11th 2001 attacks. The Camp Speicher massacre witnessed many thousands of cadets holed up by their commanders at the base, where they were told they would be released but instead were sold off to members of the Islamic State (ISIL). At the time of the massacre, there were between 5, 000 and 100, 000 unarmed cadets in the camp. Those who were Sunni were allowed to go free after repenting, but the Shia however, were ordered t be killed. According to various reports, the number of those murdered are between 1, 095 and 1, 700.
