After serving a harsh sentence in a women s prison, Diane Stuart steps off a train at Union Station in Los Angeles and into life on the outside. She is greeted by her parole officer, Joan Wilburn, a strict but compassionate woman with high expectations for her mentee. Stuart struggles to adjust to her new life and nurture her own selfdiscipline in spite of continued poverty and the bad example set by her friend and fellow parolee, Tilly Thompson.
