Within the US Department of Defense, air superiority is a core mission. However, at present Americas this strategic capability is exceedingly fragile. The vast percentage of air superiority mission is executed by the Air Force which saw its fighter aircraft inventory cut by over half in the years after the Cold War from 3, 206 fighter jets in 1990 to roughly 1, 753 fighter jets namely F15Cs, F15E, F16s, F15 E X, F22s and F35s today. New fighter programs, such as the F22, have been prematurely cancelled, while fullrate production of the F35 has been delayed much too long.
