People and Politics, Honeckers Nuclear Bunker Last refuge for the GDR leadership

17, 5001 is the official name of a bunker completed after five years of construction in 1983 outside East Berlin. In the event of nuclear war it was to provide shelter for the East German cabinet. The multistory facility is now open to the public, albeit for only a few weeks due to the expensive maintenance costs involved. It will be closed for good in October.
