Sue Gaines 1975 LP: Wake Up Children Rain Down, Like A Vine
Cincinnati gal with a refreshing progressive folkrock style that sits right alongside some of my favorite female artists like Barbara Bell and Judy Kelly. Sue wrote all the selections here, plays keyboards, and sings with a playful spirited style somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Dolly Parton. Backing Sue are four shaggy longhaired hippie types, one of whom was the drummer for one of my fave bands Millenium. Tunes often stretch out with a rural artsiness that features respectable electric guitar leads throughout, jamming pretty heavily on tracks like Rain Down, Like A Vine. Lay Your Burdens Down (not the Girard tune) is a powerful ballad with folk, psych vibes, stretching out to six and a half minutes. Nicely produced and completely free from the typical sugar coatings of the big Christian labels.
