Skinning a Senegalese traditional drum Mbeng Mbeng Sabar
Making my own sabar is as important to me as playing them. I stretch the skins faire le foor using the traditional method, with pegs and mes (webbing). I take great care in making my sabars as beautiful as I can. There are many steps, but once the drum is finished, it has a rich sound that can be tuned to be exactly as I want it. This particular sabar, known as a mbeng mbeng, plays a vital role in maintaining the base rhythm or mbalax in the music. Through each creation, my energy enters the drum, adding a unique essence and depth to its sound. All of my percussion are made for my own performances. I do not sell sabar or skin them for others.
