Carlisle Castle remains a dominating presence a fortress with a long and sometimes grim history, standing proud in the city it has watched over for nine centuries. Its strategic position on the border between England and Scotland made it a vital stronghold and border defence, and witness to many famous sieges and skirmishes. A notorious prison, it also housed a royal captive in Mary Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned at Carlisle Castle in 1568 before her eventual execution some years later in 1587. Unli
