His life, however, was itself like a fascinating novel: he was a military surgeon in the World War I and in the White army during the Civil War, got addicted to morphine and won the fight against the drug, then became a dissident writer in Soviet Moscow, and when Joseph Stalin called him and asked whether he wanted to leave the country he gave the right answer.
