In an exclusive MEE interview, Youssif Abd AlAti recalls the day his motherinlaw, Hala Rashid Abd AlAti, was shot at by Israeli forces while she was waving a white flag. She was walking with a group to a safe zone in Gaza after their neighborhood became infiltrated by Israeli forces and the Red Cross instructed them to flee. Youssifs son, Taim, was with her as she was shot, and ran away in fear. Taim was missing for hours and his father, nor anyone else in the family, could find him. Youssif mentions how he thought his son was dead, and that he was looking for his body. The family was finally told after a couple of hours, that their neighbors had found Taim and taken him to relatives in the South of Gaza. Taim is currently with his aunt in Rafah. Youssif recounts his feelings of being overwhelmed and not being able to grieve his motherinlaw in the chaos of the events that were happening around him.
