The Battle of Heiligerlee, 1568 AD , Outbreak of the Dutch Revolt
In May 1568 a Dutch army was on its retreat after besieging the city of Groningen. The army of the local Stadtholder, loyal to the Spanish, had been chasing them for a few days. At the little town of Heiligerlee, he ran into a small cavalry unit. He outnumbered them, and as he chased them into a swampy area he was sure victory would be his.
