NASAs Apollo 1 tragedy, Jan. 27, 1967
The first crewed flight of Apollo 1 was scheduled to launch Feb. 21, 1967, from Cape Kennedy, Fla. The astronauts of Apollo 1 were Lt. Col. Edward H. White II, USAF; Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom, USAF; and Lt. Roger B. Chaffee, USN. On Jan. 27, 1967, while performing a countdown rehearsal, a fire started inside the command module. The three astronauts could not escape.
