The past is another country ; the problem with remaking The Darling Buds of May
Constant attempts are now being made in television dramas to alter our view of British history and persuade us that diversity has been the default setting for centuries. The latest shot in this campaign is a new television series based on H. E. Bates books about rural life in Kent during the 1950s. The Larkins, which is currently being shown on the British television channel ITV, attempts to portray a multicultural version of England 70 years ago and the result is very odd. In most of the country at that time, one would not have in reality seen a member of any visible minority from one year to the next.
