Facebook open sourced GraphQL in 2015 (also the same year that Avengers: Age of Ultron, a movie about a psychotic supercomputer that wanted to take over the world came out. No coincidence, GraphQL is an alternative to the REST constraint on HTTP. It provides an easy way to model queries (reads, like an HTTP GET), subscriptions (longerlived, asynchronous notifications sent to the client), and mutations (updates).
