In 1878, Tchaikovsky toyed with the idea of writing an opera based on Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet and even sketched out a Love Duet based on themes from his Fantasy Overture of the same name. The project came to nothing but after Tchaikovsky s death, Sergei Taneyev completed the duet from the composer s sketches. In the original, the words were in a Russian translation of Shakespeare s play, but for a BBC Proms performance in 1981, the conductor Edward Downes provided an English version of his own. I
