This piece was commissioned by Fabien Décaillet as a gift for his newborn son, Alexis. The King s Gambit is aimed at including elements of modern progressive style alongside a more standard virtuosic euphonium style commonly featured in traditional euphonium repertoire. The compositional style focuses on complex and highly syncopated rhythmical grooves with a minimalist harmonic style, found in modernday rock and pop music. The piece demonstrates extreme range, finger dexterity, coordination of multipletonguing techniques, flexibility, and breath control which are normally expected in academic repertoire.
