A simple, selfsufficient Maharashtrian family leads a frugal but comfortable life in a village, away from the bustling metropolis of Mumbai. Shree, the father of the family, travels to Mumbai frequently on work. On one such journey, he decides to his family by taking them along. Om, the more impressionable of the two children, is enthralled. He imagines that everything will be bigger, better, and fantastic in Mumbai. But on the trip, Om faces the harsh reality of them being poor, village folk. The family end up staying in a filthy, decrepit guest room. Om spots the plush Imperial Hotel, every bit as magnificent as the Palace his grandmother described in her bedtime fables. Dazzled by the sight, he insists on visiting and staying at the hotel. Unable to placate the son, the father wagers a night s stay at the hotel if the son can stand first in his school exams.
