Germany: Chaos hits streets of Berlin as thousands join Revolutionary May 1st rally

The rally, officially registered as an event for 1, 000 participants amid the COVID19 pandemic, took place on International Workers Day in the central neighbourhoods of Neukolln and Kreuzberg. Arrests were made as violent skirmishes broke out and included the throwing of glass, stones and other objects, particularly at police targets as crowds chanted antipolice messages. Some fires were also initiated, filling the streets of Neukolln district with smoke. The police were deployed with a contingent of around 5, 600 officers and ended the rally at 9pm local time (19:00 GMT).
