In the 19th century, a group of archaeologists from Europe headed to the Middle East in search of ancient cities mentioned in the Bible as Babylon and Nineveh. Instead, however, they come across artifacts revealing to them an even more ancient civilization that until then no one had thought existed. The Sumerian civilization, occupying the region of southern Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, was one of the first ancient civilizations. Although there is no indisputable and accurate information about the origin, archaeologists still date the formation of this ancient civilization around 4000 BC.
