Around Kansas German Family Massacre 1874
Recently we visited the farm of Randy and Donella Younkin, The Smoky Y Ranch, which is near Monument Kansas. They have a pretty huge ranching operation and raise red Angus cattle, some pretty nice ones, but their ranch is really special for another reason. It may have a connection to the massacre of the German family in 1874. We recently had the opportunity to walk that ground to visit with Randy, and Donella, and their family, and to have one of the descendants of Sophia German, who was a survivor of that attack but taken captive as a child, a young woman. Ive got to tell you, it was a pretty amazing trip. The wind rustles the cottonwood leaves and the meadowlarks sing on this autumn day on Smoky Y Ranch along the Smoky Hill River in Logan County. We have come searching for the story of the German family who may have been attacked here in 1874. It is a serene landscape and as the sun goes down, we contemplate the past.
