In late 1997, Lara retrieved the Golden Mask of Tornarsuk from its sanctuary on Melnikov Island, one of the socalled Islands of Four Mountains inhabited by the Aleut people. Now, only a few months later, reports are coming in from Alaskan shipping vessels about some kind of oily substance polluting the Bering Sea originating on the shores of Zinoviev Island, located in the same area. Lara has discovered in her postmortem research that the Golden Mask of Tornarsuk was forged long before the Aleuts made contact with the outside world, and relates to an old folk tale about a wicked serpent creature known as the Tizheruk.
