Rule of Law or the Rule of the Bully
After the US resolution to extend the UN arms embargo on Iran got resoundingly rejected at the United Nations Security Council, the US formally moved on Thursday to restore all UN sanctions on Iran by triggering the controversial snapback mechanism of the JCPOA. A deal that Americans officially left in May 2018. The US move was immediately rejected by its European allies who are trying to save the Iran Nuclear Deal. They have argued that because the US is no longer a member of the JCPOA, it is not eligible to use this dispute resolution mechanism. Chinese and Russians had already announced their objection to the US decision. What will be the fate of the JCPOA Has the US the legal right to activate the trigger mechanism Will the US change its mind about its unilateralist foreign policy What will happen to international relations and norms if the US succeeds in enforcing its agenda on other countries
