An estimated 2, 000 people were believed to be buried under the rubble as of May 27, 2024, three days after the disaster. Unstable earth and tribal warfare in the area have dimmed hopes of finding any survivors, and rescue crews said they have stopped trying to find victims buried deeper than 8 metres (26ft).
