OKEQ April Art Gallery: Confronting the Male Nude: A Figure Study of the Male Form
Josh New is a commercial freelance photographer from Oklahoma specializing in portraiture and conceptual art. He received his MFA in Photography from the University of Tulsa in 2011 focusing on a thesis critically exploring modern American masculinity, both in gay and straight cultures. He continues to create work showcasing the male form in hopes that oneday nudity, both male and female, will cease to be feared and brutally censored. This show is a celebration of male beauty and figure photography that is currently banned from most social media platforms because it goes against community standards. The human body, even when not sexualized, continues to be censored and excluded from discussion in modern American society. My hope is to present work that is beautiful, emotional, and thoughtprovoking and to show that these community standards are actually an archaic barrier to healthy reflection and comfort with our own bodies.
