The Story of Futabayama (with English sub) ( Most bouts are from 1942 43)
This is a documentary on the 35th Yokozuna Futabayama. He is most famous for setting the 69 match winning streak record, which still stands today. Even after the streak came to an end, he was dominant, and even after retiring, he was a leading figure in sumo. It is interesting that it was never noted in the documentary that Futabayama could only see out of one eye, and his pinky was short because part of it was severed in an accident. The documentary starts with an introduction narrated by Shimura Seijun, an announcer of the 50s. The rest of the documentary was narrated by the great announcer Wada Shinken. He was the radio announcer during Futabayama s era. No live broadcasts were saved, so this is the next closest thing we have. It is a precious piece of history. This was by far the most difficult project I have worked on. It is old and militaristic Japanese, spoken very fast. Very difficult to translate. It took me a while as I had to consult a dictionary every other sentence. Wada Shinken
