While my favorite Lanza performance of this aria comes from the second Shower of Stars TV show of October 28, 1954 (which also includes his very best Someday from The Vagabond King ), this version is quite thrilling in its own right. The voice is technically secure, fresh as dew, and that inimitable Lanza sound is already very much in place here. As one might expect, it is an emotionally charged, no holds barred reading, with glorious high notes an amazing accomplishment for a 23 year old singer. While creating this video, I learned of the passing of Damon Lanza, Mario s eldest son, who suffered a heart attack on August 18, aged 55.
