LAVERNE COX, Before They Were Famous, 2016 Biography Before Lavern Cox became the first black transgendered woman to grace the cover of TIME magazine in 2014, and be nominated for a Primetime Emmy award. Lavern was born in Alabama and identified as a girl from an early age without any problems. That is until her teachers and peers started to bully her for being different.
