Peabody 1870, 77 ( Connecticut State Militia) POV firing
Original Spanish pattern Peabody rifle made at Providence Tool Co. in Rhode Island. One of 2, 000 ordered by the Connecticut State Militia in 1871. It was originally chambered in. 433 Peabody (. 43 Spanish), but the Militia later sent their rifles back to the factory in 1877 to be rechambered in. 4570. The Peabody design dates back to the Civil War, but it always seemed to be at the wrong time and place to see truly largescale adoption. It s best remembered today as the action that the much more famous MartiniHenry would be based on.
