Why I prefer Mike Portnoy to Mike Mangini
This video covers several reasons why Mike Mangini has disappointed me in Dream Theater. Some of these reasons are not Mangini s direct fault. I received a crediblesounding email last year from someone who spoke to Mangini a couple times in Italy, saying that Mangini was frustrated with his role in Dream Theater because Petrucci and Rudess were treating him like a mere session player, forcing him to play prewritten parts. Mangini also stated that Petrucci destroyed his drum sound, and that LaBrie couldn t sing like he used to (that s a nobrainer). Even then, we can fault Mangini for having a lack of spine relative to Mike Portnoy, who after all, was the member of Dream Theater most opposed to Elektra Records attempting to commercialize the Falling Into Infinity album. All of you Dream Theater fans who celebrated Portnoy leaving the band because he supposedly has such a big ego. Well, you got what you wanted in the form of one extremely humble Michael Mangini.
